Self Care Routine (That Changed My Life)

May Avatar

Do you ever feel like you’re running on empty or just barely keeping it together?

For years, I wasn’t showing up as my best self—I constantly put self-care on the back burner and rarely prioritized my mental and physical well-being. Let’s change that, starting today.

Importance of Self Care

Self care isn’t just face masks and cucumbers on your eyes. It’s the intentional practice of nurturing your all around wellbeing. Whether that’s—

  • Emotional (Ex: journaling, therapy)
  • Mental (Ex: reading, social detox)
  • Physical (Ex: eating healthy, exercise)
  • Spiritual (Ex: meditation, reflecting)
  • Social (Ex: saying no to draining relationships)

I’d love to share what I do on a daily basis to ensure I can properly tend to my needs.

My Morning Self Care Routine

For my morning self care routine, I always avoid getting on my phone (or any electronics!) for at least an hour after I wake up. I also recommend opening any blinds or windows to let the light in!

Instead, you can incorporate habits such as journaling, meditation, or intention setting. I do at least one in the morning to start my day.

For the most important meal of the day, always water before coffee! I always aim for a light, yet nourishing breakfast (Include fruits like bananas or strawberries, yogurt or avocado on toast)

If you have more time in the morning, you can do your skincare routine or take a long shower with calming music. Occasionally, I’ll add in yoga as well to get my body moving for the day.

Midday Reset

If I’m having a busy day, I always remind myself that I need a break— So do you! I try to space out my work or any tasks I have during the day so I don’t get burnt out.

Examples:

Another big change that has helped me tremendously is making sure I have time for mindfulness. If you don’t know, mindfulness is the act of being in the present moment

Not worrying about the future, or past, and really focusing on the current moment.

Mindfulness Activities:

  • Deep Breathing
  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Reconnect with Nature

Evening Wind Down Routine

To end my day, I get off my phone at least an hour before I go to bed. This can improve your ability to go to sleep, as well as sleep quality.

I love to reflect on everything that happened throughout my day in my journal. It really helps me bring the day to an end and is crucial to my routine.

If you like to read, a nice book before bed can still keep your mind stimulated in a calming way. If you aren’t a book worm, some other ideas are:

  • Skin Care Routine
  • Slow Stretching
  • Drinking Herbal Tea

Personally, I also like to keep my room cool and make sure I go to bed around the same time every night.
